Kwong Shook Ling Residence, Hong Kong

Design by Dylan Baker-Rice

The Kwong Shook Ling Residence in Hong Kong is a unique and innovative residential flat that combines contemporary western and traditional Chinese architectural elements to create a truly remarkable living space.

The design of the Kwong Shook Ling Residence draws inspiration from both baroque architecture, specifically the work of Borromini, and traditional Chinese architecture with its open and flexible spaces. The result is a design that is neither purely western nor purely Chinese, but a synthesis of the two influences.

One of the standout features of this flat is its curvaceous and sinuous design. From the ceiling to the curved cabinetry in the living room, the space flows with organic shapes. However, there are also angular elements, such as sharp cut-outs for storage vitrines and windows, that add a sense of contrast and definition to the design.

Natural materials are used throughout the flat, but they are manipulated in unconventional ways. Wood and marble are bent and shaped to create unique forms and textures. Light colors and hidden lighting further enhance the atmosphere, blurring the boundaries of the space and creating a soft and atmospheric environment during the day, and a dramatic one at night.

The Kwong Shook Ling Residence is a testament to the global and local influences that shape Hong Kong. From the modern chinoiserie screen to the Italian bathroom tiles, this residence embraces a variety of influences to create a truly modern and cosmopolitan living space.

The design and construction of the Kwong Shook Ling Residence involved a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Skilled local craftsmen executed the details of the residence on-site, while the initial design work was manufactured using the latest CNC technology in Chinese factories and abroad. This approach allowed for cost reduction and shorter construction timelines.

The Kwong Shook Ling Residence spans approximately 2,400 square feet (220 square meters) and is located in the Jardine's Lookout Area on Hong Kong Island. The project took 10 months to complete, including the design and construction phases.

The design of the Kwong Shook Ling Residence was the result of extensive research in both material production and design principles. The goal was to utilize local materials and production methods while incorporating traditional Chinese design motifs and spatial organization principles. Feng Shui principles were also considered in the placement of doors, beds, water, and heating elements.

Despite the challenges of working with local contractors who prioritized speed over quality, the Kwong Shook Ling Residence successfully overcame these obstacles through careful control of off-site manufacturing and close supervision of construction. The result is a stunning and unique living space that seamlessly blends contemporary and traditional design elements.

The Kwong Shook Ling Residence was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2012 in the category of Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
